 When grandma's smile touched my deepest heart

Last month, my classmates and I from SMP Santa Maria joined an activity called SMW or Saint Mary’s Way. Each group had a different place to serve, and my group went to Panti Wreda Nazareth on Jl. Cikutra No. 7, Bandung. Before leaving, our teachers reminded us to stay polite, friendly, and serve with a sincere heart.

When we arrived, we gathered in front of the church beside the nursing home. We talked for a while and took a group photo. After that, we entered the nursing home, and the grandmas welcomed us with warm smiles. Some waved, some laughed, and it made us feel happy and comfortable.

We started the activity in the hall with a prayer. Then, we entertained the grandmas by singing together. I played the guitar and also became the MC. At first, I felt nervous because I was afraid of making mistakes, but when I saw the grandmas smiling and singing along, I became more confident and enjoyed it.

After singing, we played a simple ball game with them. We threw the ball around, and the person who got the ball last had to answer a question. Even though the game was simple, the grandmas laughed a lot and wanted to play again. I realized that happiness can come from small activities.

Next, we had snack time. We passed out bread and drinks, helped open the plastic, and assisted grandmas who needed help eating. Many of them said thank you, and it made my heart feel warm and grateful.

Unfortunately, I couldn’t stay until the end of the event because I had to leave early for a basketball competition at SMPN 31. I felt sad to go, but also happy because we had already brought joy to the grandmas.

From this experience, I learned that I can take responsibility, face my fear, and help others even when I feel unsure. I also learned the importance of serving with humility and kindness. After this activity, I want to be more aware of people around me greeting friends, helping others, and listening with a sincere heart. It was a meaningful and unforgettable experience.
